An underpad is a promise made to a surface and the person on it. It keeps a hospital bed dry through the night, a delivery table clean through a birth, and an elderly parent comfortable through the small hours when no one is watching. What the layers actually do
A good underpad is four jobs stacked in one thin sheet. The soft nonwoven top layer sits against the skin and stays dry to the touch. Beneath it, an absorbent core of fluff and super-absorbent polymer pulls fluid in and locks it away instead of letting it pool. A waterproof film on the underside stops anything reaching the mattress below, and on better pads a set of tuck-in flaps or an anti-slip finish keeps the whole thing where it was placed. Cheap underpads cut the core, which is precisely the layer that decides whether the promise holds.
